Markandeya Mahadev Temple or Sri Markandeshwar Mahadev Dham is one of the main deities of  Purvanchal.

Markandeya Mahadev Temple is one of the religious places in Uttar Pradesh.

This Dhama, equivalent to Dvadash Jyotirlinga, is in the Sri Markandeya Purana. 

Markandey Mahadev Temple is one of the most famous temples of Lord Shiva.

The temple is in the village of Khaiti, 30 km from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

 

Lord Shiva is totally devoted to this temple.

 

This temple is also the Mahamrityunjaya Temple.

Legend has it that there was a married couple named Mrikandu and his wife Marudavati. They were devotees of Lord Shiva and had no children.

He worship Lord Shiva and one day Lord Shiva come with his worship and gave a vision to both of them.

The couple wants children.

Lord Shiva said that children are not happy in family life.

Because you worship me, you have two options before you.

The age of the older normal son and the short-lived extraordinary son is only 16 years old.

The couple asked Lord Shiva to have an unusual son. 

After some time, Marudavati gave birth to a child and named him “Markandeya” (meaning “son of Mrikandu”).

He is extraordinary and God gave the kid talent and he became very smart as a child.

He always worships Lord Shiva and the master of the mantra Mahamrityunjaya.

When he was 16 years old, Yama (the god of death) came to Earth to take them.

At that time, Shiva was worshiping at the Markandeya Temple.

When Yama asked him to go with him, he got very scared and asked Lord Shiva to protect him.

Yama threw a rope at the boy and after a while, Lord Shiva appeared in the Shiva Ling.

Lord Shiva was very angry with Yama’s rude behavior.

Lord Shiva saved Markandeya’s life and blessed him with eternal life and also said that he would stay forever.

On that day, Lord Shiva announced that his devotees would always be safe from the ropes of Yama.

The angry presence of Lord Shiva who appeared to save Markandeya is called Kalashmahara Murti.

At that time Lord Bolenath told his chief devotee Marandeya Rishi that from today all devotees will come to this temple.

He will worship you before me.

Since then, this Astadham has come to be known as Markandey Mahadev.

In Markandeya Mahadev Temple, apart from Mahashivaratri every year, there are several Kanwari, and Jalabhishek babas in the month of Sawan.

Also, devotees here are blessed with Triadshis in the month of worshiping Lord Bholanath.

Devotees flock to the Makandeya Mahadev Temple, located on the banks of the Ganga Gomti River, about 30 km from Varanasi, to celebrate Mahasvaratri.

 

Millions of devotees from different parts of Purvanchal come here to perform Jalabhishek on the occasion of Mahashivaratri. Shivaratri celebrations have more people here than at Kashi Vishwanath temple.

A month-long fair is also held in the month of Sawan.

Many other stories about the temple are circulating. 

 There is a legend about the Markandeya Mahadev Temple.

It is said that in ancient times when Markandeya Rishi was born, he had an age defect.

Astrologers told his father, Rishi Mrikand, that the child was only 14 years old.

When the parents heard this, they were amazed. Following the advice of a learned Brahmin, Markandeya’s child’s parents started worshiping Shiva by making an idol of Shiva out of the sand on the bank of the river Ganga Gomti Sangam.

Obsessed with intense worship of Lord Shankar.

As soon as Markandeya’s child turned 14, Yamaraj came to visit him.

At that time, Markandeya’s child was also immersed in the worship of Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva appeared as soon as Yamaraj started to end his life. 

 

 Yamaraja had to remove his leg as soon as Lord Shiva appeared in person.

He said that my devotee will always be immortal and will be worshiped before me.

Since then, Markandeya ji and Mahadev ji have been worshiped here and henceforth this place came to be known as the Temple of Markandeya ji Mahadev.

Since then, Markandeya Mahadev has been worshiped at the walls of Lord Shankar’s temple.

People believe that in the months of Mahashivaratri and Savan if you bring a sheet with Rama’s name and a glass of water, all your wishes will come true. Trayodashi (Teras) is also of great importance in the Markandeya Mahadev Temple.

People come here to have a son and to live a long life for their husbands.
