Tehri Dam is the largest dam in India and the eighth tallest in the world.

It is on the Bhagirathi River. 

The Project is one of the largest hydroelectric power projects in the world. 

It is 261 m high and  575 m long. 

The Tehri Dam Project generates 1,000 MW of electricity.

In addition, the dam provides irrigation and other services by taking water from the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers. 

The first phase of the dam started in 2006 and the other phases are still in progress.

Basically, Tehri Dam is an earthen embankment dam. 

The spillway system consists of a trough spillway (consisting of three spillway radial gates) and four shaft spillways. 

It is designed for a Maximum Probable  Flood (PMF) of 15,540 m3 and a drop of 220 m, with a total storage capacity of 3,540 million m3 and an effective capacity of 2,615 million m3.

History of Tehri Dam 

Initially, For the construction of this dam, a preliminary survey was conducted in 1961.

But The design was prepared in 1972.

However, there were many twists and turns in the construction of this dam.

So, construction began in 1978.

However, they asked for help in 1986, providing technical and economic assistance to the Soviet Union, but political activity ended this assistance.

Later, in 1990, the construction of a dam was reviewed again, and in 2006, the construction of the Tehri Dam was completed.

In 2012, the second part of this project was merged with  Koteshwar Dam.

Electricity supply in States

This dam provides water for the irrigation of 270,000 hectares of land.

The electricity produced from this project completes the power supply in states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu Kashmir, Rajasthan, Himachal, and Chandigarh.

Tehri dam protest movement was held for Tehri dam 

 The construction of this dam was very important.

Today the construction of this dam has given our country a major project.

According to scientists, if this dam is built, then this construction could make about 10,000 people homeless.

Tehri Dam Movement 

 For all these reasons, in 1990,  Tehri Bandhu Anti-Sangharsh Samiti filed a formal petition to halt the construction of this dam and submitted it directly to the Supreme Court.

Since then, the case has been in court for about 10 years.

Sundalal Bahuguna,  known as an environmentalist, organized many protests against the dam’s construction and went on a hunger strike in 1995.

There were also strikes and protests from local residents.

As a result of which the government also demonstrated force and took action against these people.  

 

Tehri HPP Project 

 It consists of an underground power plant housing 4 turbine-generator sets of 250 MW each (capacity 1000 MW).

Design to operate with a head change of 90 m (4 units of 250 MW).

Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) took over the construction and operation of the dam and power plant.

It was commissioned in 2006.  

 The project is designed to provide additional irrigation for 2.70 lakh hectares in the  Lower Ganga Command Area, Parallel Lower Ganga, Madhya Ganga Stage – I, and Agra Canal System.

Existing teams will stabilize 6.04 million hectares of irrigation.

In addition to providing much-needed electricity for Northern Power System and GCA irrigation.

the project will provide drinking water to Delhi and UP. 

 

 Tehri Dam Technical Plan 

Tehri Dam is a masonry embankment dam approximately 260.5 meters (855 feet) high. 

It is 575 meters (1886 feet) long, 20 meters (66 feet) wide at the ridge, and 1128 meters (3701 feet) wide at the base. 

The dam creates a  2.6 square kilometer reservoir with a surface area of ​​52 sq km. 

The hydropower capacity is 1,000 MW, with an additional 1,000 MW pumped storage. 

The Tehri Dam and  Tehri Pumped Storage  Plant are part of the Tehri Dam Hydropower Complex.

 The Northern Regional Load Allocation Center manages the schedule and dispatch of the Tehri Dam Hydroelectric Power Plant.

It is operated by the  Power System Operation Corporation.  

Currently THDC India Ltd. The dam generates about 3,000 million units of energy per year.
