Roadways in Chhattisgarh-Transport of Chhattisgarh

Being an important industrial centre, it is necessary for Chhattisgarh to have good road connectivity to other Indian states. The road infrastructure here thus is undergoing major transformations.

The length of the roadways here is about 35,388 kilometres, with connectivity, throughout the country. Out of this, about 2,184 kilometres are taken up by the national highways, while the state highways occupy about 3,611 kilometres.

The remaining are taken up by district roads and village roads. Regular passenger buses are available, connecting major cities here to nearby areas, as well as rural villages, thus providing convenience as well as cost-effective transport services.

Bus Services in Chhattisgarh-Transport of Chhattisgarh

Recently Central government approved the state government’s proposal and sanctioned 442 city buses for 21 premier cities in Chhattisgarh. This was aimed at providing better transport facilities in the state. The project to introduce 442 buses would include both AC and non-AC buses. Twin cities of the Bhilai-Durg region were allotted a maximum of 110 buses, 50 buses for Bilaspur, 42 for Korba, 35 for Ambikapur, 20 for Rajnandgaon and others for Mahasamund, Chirmiri, Kanker, Jagdalpur, Dhamtari etc.

Some of the major rail lines of Chhattisgarh pass through the state and Bilaspur, Durg, Raipur, Manendragarh and Champa are important rail junctions.

Railways in Chhattisgarh play a major role in the transportation of passengers as well s cargo within and outside the state. The entire railway network here is operated by the South East Central Railway Zone, with Bilaspur being its zonal headquarters.

Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur Railway Junction are the major railway junctions here, as they are the starting point of many long-distance trains and are well connected to major Indian cities.

The state of Chhattisgarh accounts for about one-sixth of our country’s railway revenue. It is also said to be having the highest freight loading in the country.

Durg, Champa, Bilaspur, and Mahasamund are the major railway heads in this region. To increase the concentration of railways in this state, various new railway lines have been proposed and many new projects are in progress including Raigarh-Mand Colliery to Bhupdeopur rail line, Dalli-Rajhara–Jagdalpur rail line, Pendra Road-Gevra Road Rail Line rail line and Barwadih-Chirmiri rail line.

A metro line connecting Durg-Bhilai-Raipur-Naya Raipur has also been proposed.

Formerly called Mana Airport, this airport is in Mana in Raipur and is one of the busiest ones in this state.

Known for its superior services, this airport topped the list of the best non-metro airports in the country in the year 2014.

This airport connects Chhattisgarh state to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Indore, Bangalore etc by regular flights.
